What is that fixture I see on your nose, asked hubby looking down at the flashing gem that adorned by nose. I noticed that his normally inscrutable face for once bore an expression of ulter dislike and disapproval. Though I anticipated such reaction to my new acquisition, I never expected him to make it so blatantly obvious.
I thought it would look nice on me, don’t you think so, dear? I asked hopefully, trying to flaunt the colourless stone.
Well, I feel there is nothing wrong with ‘that’ piece of jewellery, in fact, it has a lovely sparkle, he said emphasising ‘that’.
Yes, I knew you would love the sparkle, I said, feeling happy that he was able to admire the diamond.
Don’t you think the diamond stud gives a facelift, I asked enthusiastically.
He scrutinised my face for a long time but no answer came.
Instead of hedging, why don’t you simply say whether it does or doesn’t give a facelift?
O.K. If you insist on an answer, here it is, he said, Yes. It does, if the nose is acquiline, pointed and shapely but no, it does not give a facelift if the nose is blunt, flat and….
I chose to leave hubby alone to complete the sentence.

You wanted a feedback, but what you really wanted was a reassurance that the diamond nose stud embellishes your face. Your husband gave a feedback, but he thought he has to be truthful in a marital relationship and you wanted it that way. Ofcourse beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. In several African countries, a bulbous nose with several rings suspended from it is seen as enhancing the beauty of the wearer but by European standards, an aquiline, eagle shaped nose is admired. Most of the Indians admire the Aryan features which have come down to us from Iran, of fair skin and aquiline noses. Coming to the skit, the poor nose could have rested for ever without drawing undue attention but the diamond stud will draw the attention of the onlookers to the nose. And Indians like Aryan features, not Dravidian.
Using self-deprecatory humour is a nice way of tickling others. I liked this short skit.
In Ramayan, after the Rama wins the war he invites all the monkey warriors and their wives to Ayodhya.
The warrior wives stare at Sita and are famously quoted as saying,”What do they find in her that a war of this magnitude has to be fought?, she does not even have a tail”
This is really funny. I had not heard this before. This is an example of the fact that “Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder”. Talking of humans, the true beauty of a woman is her inherent ability to make a man better in every way. Some women, no matter how old they get, never lose their beauty — they merely move it from their faces into their hearts.
Seriously, I could never understand the premium that is given to a beautiful face, whether aquiline nose, pouting lips, dimpled cheeks, bright eyes, right & left facial symmetry, nice flowing locks of hair or pearly and symmetrical teeth. These are genetic endowments. How can a woman take credit for that ? Much more weightage should be given to the achievements of the person viz., qualifications, hobbies, and a compassionate character, when chosing one’s bride. This is my passionate belief.
The same yardstick applies to women as well when choosing their grooms
