Through and through English-Vinglish is Sri Devi’s movie where she sails through her role as Sashi, a home maker and an expert Laddu maker with absolute ease. Sashi, a loving wife and mother to her two children cannot speak English and her husband and school going daughter think they have every right to belittle her without any consideration of her feelings. The second half is all about how she acquits herself in a foreign country where she goes for her niece’s wedding and uses the opportunity to learn English in four weeks. There are many embarrassing situations she faces but comes out with greater confidence at the end of it all winning accolades from her English tutor, her class mates and her sister’s family. Unlike the climax in Indian movies where they offer instant results, we find it is toned down to appear natural and convincing and most important of all several Indian women who lack knowledge of spoken English could relate to.

I saw the Hindi version of “English Vinglish” with Sridevi in the lead role at Satyam theatre. The film is also in Tamil and Telugu versions. It is directed by Gauri Shinde. Though it is cast in the Bollywood mode, it is quite a different genre. Believe me, I have never seen Sridevi on the screen before. Her acting in this film is devastatingly beautiful. Also, she is a devastating middle-aged beauty! I liked the mild feminism that threads through the story, e.g., “Cooking by a male is an art; cooking by a female is a duty”. The film was classified as a hit by trade in India and is in the U.K. Top Ten 10 list. Some critics compared Sridevi with Meryl Streep and Audrey Hepburn!
It’s a movie which scores on all counts–direction, story ,dialogue, acting by the protagonist (who is mildly forceful ) and minimum songs.Only wish Indian audience will appreciate this movie where Sridevi has made a comeback after a hiatus of several years.
We also saw the Hindi version in the multiplex here in Mysore and we loved it. Can’t add anything to both of your comments which are spot on.
