I just finished reading Chennaivaasi written by T.S.Tirumurti and published by Harper Collins. The story line is familiar about a traditional Tam-Bram family and the conflict that arises between the patriarch and the youngest son when he wishes to marry an American Jewish girl. The novel is in two parts and you notice with the introduction of new characters (all and sundry) the author suddenly shifts from the past to the present tense in the second part throwing a few surprises. T.S.Tirumurthi who is working for the Indian Foreign Service should be lauded for his keen observation of the goings on in contemporary society and weaving a story around it to which the reader can relate.
