We talk of the deteriorating habit of reading among all age groups but our recent experience went to prove the situation is not so bad after all and we have hope for the future. A school going girl we met said her assignment was to write a review of a book which she was to select from four authors given by her teacher and two were Ruskin Bond and R.K.Narayan. I recalled my meeting with the first and related it to her. Her little brother, hardly 4, said, ‘aunty, I too want to read but I can’t borrow books from the school library until I am in class three. Suggest some books for me to read so that I can ask my father to buy them’. Yes, reading habit starts from the cradle and with the right environment continues even much later.
