CHENNAI: Author N Meera Raghavendra Rao wrote her seventh book, Chennai Collage, in just seven weeks! “I wanted to write about the city and get the book released during Madras Fortnight. With just seven or eight weeks at my disposal, it was quite tough for me to come up with chapters and also the apt content to write the book,” said the author at the launch of the book in Odyssey recently.
Rao explained the significance of smaller aspects of the city that she has touched upon in the tome. The launch was presided over by B S Raghavan, former policy advisor to the United Nations, and KRA Narasaiah, historian, author and columnist, who spoke about the book. After the launch, there was a reading session wherein excerpts from the book that touched upon the various aspects of Madras, including Madras bashai, which is exclusive to the city.
For instance, Rao read several conversations from the book between grandparents and grand children where the grandmother visits a star hotel for the first time. She also engaged with the audience and answered questions about her experiences while writing the book. Rao said that she was inspired by people, many of whom encouraged her to write the book. She also spoke about her previous book on the city, Madras Mosaic, which again showcased Chennai from a different perspective.
