I AM monarch of all I survey;
My right there is none to dispute;
From the centre all round to the sea
I am lord of the fowl and the brute
O Solitude! where are the charms
That sages have seen in thy face?
Better dwell in the midst of alarms,
Than reign in this horrible place.
I am out of humanity’s reach;
|I must finish my journey alone
The above lines of SOLITUDE by Alexander Selkirk come to my mind when I think of people getting more and more distant not due to geographical locations but their lack of will to communicate despite possessing the latest ‘means’ of communication, some coming freeat that!
Again ,my impression was reinforced about one being a learner all one’s life (even a senior columnist S.Muthiah has mentioned it while referring to ‘Madhwas of Madras) but found there are the ‘know alls’ who think it is infra dig to learn despite their exposure/experience.I was surprised to hear a few such kind who took pride in making the arrogant eat a humble pie and when asked what if the situation was reversed, pat came the reply by one such queen bee who said ‘ of course not ,I would neither admit my mistakes nor would I apologize’!
Our society is made up of AlexanderSelkirks who may not be out of humanity’s reach but choose to journey l alone and moan that no one cares for them!
