‘Go for Gold’ seems to have been the slogan all these past years to mark that auspicious Akshaya Tritiya, when it is believed whatever is purchased on this day multiplies manifold in future. What I found surprising this year was it is just not gold or silver but a whole array of products that are being advertised, where the companies are offering attractive discounts to lure consumers. The sale begins a day earlier and closes two days later, which means one can choose to shop for these products on any one of the days mentioned. The products include digital cameras, blackberry smart phones, television sets, Laptops, air conditioners and a whole lot of branded household gadgets.
I went around window shopping and found some of the chennaites who normally make a bee line to shops, big and small to purchase gold or silver, were making a paradigm shift by going for all things other than the yellow and white metal, the considerable lowering of their price notwithstanding!
All kudos to the strategy the marketing lot adopted keeping people’s sentiment in mind—where the advertisement has a picture of some of the products in the background, with a kalasam placed amidst gold coins bearing Goddess Lakshmi’s face .
